A Tornado Model

After having gone through this course , I decided to make a model of my process, which illustrates my thinking, the decisions I took and why .

This particular design process, I feel is  best represented by a Tornado.

My design process derives from three areas of expertise from the cloud of knowledge. The three are technology, ergonomics and space design.
Once you have identified your problem, there are many possibilities you start thinking of across these these three areas broadly. They become a part of your ideation cloud. These ideas have to pass through the eye of the storm which is an analogy to the human factors. After going through this , the ideas and possibilities that are able to hold converge to form a design solution that creates the changes on the ground.
                                                             Below is my model

Solution series 2 :The Motorable section

This is the motorable section of the jetty which will be used during the races etc.
It's hull is a combination hull.  Which combines the properties of the planning hulls and displacement hulls of ships.

Planning hulls have a steeper stern and can cruise through the water at greater speeds because they are more streamlined

Displacement hulls are built for stability and have a very light angle to stern.

Materials to build the jetty

The jetty need to be made of a material that will withstand daily variations of the weather for months. in other words it needs to face the elements for the entire year except for the 4 months of the monsoon.

It will have to face heat, sunshine,  and temperatures dropping to 10 degrees Celsius in the winter. It will also have to deal with the irregular rains that happen through out the rest of the year.

Other physical stresses will be the weight of the rowers carrying the boats at the least. at the most it will have to deal with will be around 50 people, if the the jetty is going to be used for more social purposes.

The jetty i'm planning to create for the college will have changeable levels. And hence some level of motorization will be required as the ballast tanks need water to be pumped in and out of them . The material will have to incorporate that.

The jetty used in the boat club in the MIT Rajbaug campus will be semi permanent. The reason for this being that apart from seasonal variations of water, there can be a drastic drop in water levels when a release of the water is ordered from the local authorities to feed the farms downstream.

Another feature i am planning to add is to make a section of the jetty motor-able. This will serve the judges during regattas and races. During this years State championships held in the river, the judges had to sit in an old run down wooden boat which did not have any arrangements for sun protection.

The motorable section of the jetty will have accommodation for a detachable engine . It will also have grooves on its edges for a water- proof canvas roof to be erected on it so that it may serve as a shelter for the judges
